Life can be hard

I grew up same as everybody else. I went to school, had friends, and even had a girlfriend or two. But I was different and everyone knew it. I didn’t understand the people around me. I was never really into sports and sometimes my mind would wander. I often found myself drifting off into my own world. And even though I was surrounded by people, I often felt alone and isolated.

As I grew into adulthood, I yearned to belong. And try as I might to fit in, I just didn’t want the same things as the people around me. I told myself that I was destined for bigger and greater things and yet I took the same path as everyone else. You know the story; college, career, marriage, and family.

Even though I held on to my future and kept trying for more, I was held back. I watched over and over as my colleagues were promoted and found new opportunities in the workforce. I applied, interviewed, and listened to feedback over and over again. It felt like my life was in a constant struggle and I began to resent my job.

I thought, “I’m at least as good as them. Why am I still here and they have all moved on?” I tried everything. I put my heart into my job and worked really hard, but I continued to be the one left unnoticed and unwanted. That’s when I started to see the pattern.

It was more than I could take

My life was this huge chain of being different, unnoticed, and unwanted. Sure, I’d made many friends. But none of my colleagues ever invited me to parties or even just to hang out after work. I started to feel like I didn’t really belong anywhere and I took those feelings home with me.

I stopped playing with my children. I pushed my spouse away. As I began my pattern of self-sabotage, all I could see was a world that didn’t want me. It wasn’t very long before I didn’t want me either.

A light at the end of the tunnel

Through my struggle, there was one person who held on. She would patiently pick me up off the floor after my pains became too much to bear. She took me to watch a speaker talk about his brush with suicide and his decision to fight the darkness. As I watched and listened, I discovered that I was not so different after all.

We all have struggles. Life is hard. And some of us have been downtrodden. But life is not about the pain. It’s about the happiness that the pain brings us. I learned that I could create my own struggles by working toward an outcome of my choosing. I was in control of my future and I was in control of my happiness as long as I made the choice and took action.

Finding Purpose

Taking action was scary. I wasn’t even sure what I wanted anymore and had to rediscover who I was. I began by writing the book I’d always dreamed of writing. I started a business and volunteered to be on the board of a non-profit organization. Service had always been an important part of my life and I found it again.

I also learned that I have a voice. And in using that voice, I make connections with people every day. I searched for people who, like me, wanted to make a difference in this world. I looked for opportunities to serve everywhere I turned and found that that I could make a difference. I have the power to cheer up the sad and mend the broken hearted.

Changing lives

Through the power of my story, I have found and inspired people who think like I do. And that’s why I’m here, teaching ordinary people like you how to tell their story. It was when I learned to tell my story, that I began to have the greatest impact.
